(18) But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.”

There are few things more seductive than the hypnotic power of comfort and convenience. Plush slippers and house shoes that make getting out of bed more relaxing. Cotton robes that emulate that Goldilocks “just right” embrace of your sheet and comforter.

Then getting the kids up you need a legal stimulant, right? If you choose to do coffee at home, the Keurig will give you just the right amount of Joe. You then choose your favorite International Delight creamer to jazz up the flavor. Of course, if you go by Starbucks or Dunkin, it is a separate discussion.

Let’s not kid ourselves, even scrambling to get two or three kids out the door to school while pivoting to get to work is still – at worst – a pretty good start to the day.

It really requires little effort in both our natural and spiritual walks to go along so we can get along. If Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego would have just gone with the flow and bowed down there would not have been a spectacle. People would not have been buzzing about their disobedience. Most importantly, King Nebuchadnezzar would not have sentenced them to burn to death.

Allowing Christ on the inside to motivate us to stand up for right cuts across the grain. It is not easy. You will stand out if you don’t join in with your school friends to talk about the boy with holes in his shoes. It will take time from your Saturday to go to Greenhouse Ministries and volunteer at the Mobile Food Pantry. It will seem inconvenient to sit down and have a cup of coffee with a person of another race or religion in effort to better understand their perspective.

Yet, if we avoid doing these things just because they are difficult, we dishonor God and in so doing, we preserve injustice.
