The deal closed last week for the reimagining of the classic fantasy story.

According to Deadline, Kenya Barris, the creator of ABC's Black-ish, is set to write and direct the upcoming Wizard of Oz remake for Warner Bros. Previous reports mentioned Watchmen helmer Nicole Kassell as the film's director. However, the reason for her departure is unknown. The movie is described as a fresh take on the classic story of Dorothy and her adventure to Oz.

L. Frank Baum is the creator of the initial tale, a book titled The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which would see countless spinoffs and reimaginings over the years. Oz, Oz the Great and Powerful, Return to Oz, and Twentieth Century Oz are just a few interpretations we've seen since the book's publication in 1900. However, the most famous adaptation is The Wizard of Oz, released in 1939. The story follows a young Dorothy Gale and her dog Toto as they are swept away by a Tornado on their Kansas farm to a magical Land of Oz. She embarks on a quest with three new friends to see the Wizard, who is her only chance to return home.

The retelling may be different from the original plot, but details are scarce from Barris and Warner Bros. However, according to Variety, the upcoming adaptation will at least feature some similar elements, like the iconic ruby red slippers from Dorothy. The project will be produced by Barris' Khalabo Ink Society, with Sheila Walcott overseeing the remake for the studio.

Black-ish wrapped up its 8-season, 176-episode run in April 2022. Beginning in 2014, the series reached 26 Emmy nominations, receiving praise from audiences and critics while it was on the air. In addition, the show has two spinoffs based on the original characters, including Grown-ish and Mixed-ish.

Barris has been branching out since his successful comedy series, and next month the director will launch Entergalactic, a television event that he co-created with Kid Cudi. According to the Deadline report, the project will combine adult animation, music, fashion, and art to tell a story about modern Black love in New York City. Entergalactic will star Timothée Chalamet, Vanessa Hudgens, Keith David, and Macaulay Culkin.

Kenya Barris is also working on the upcoming remake of White Men Can't Jump, the sports comedy that initially starred Woody Harrelson. Jack Harlow will be replacing Harrelson in the remake. In addition, the director is completing production on his first feature film, You People, for Netflix. Barris wrote the screenplay with Jonah Hill, following a new couple and their families as they examine modern love amidst cultural clashes, societal expectations, and generational differences.

The Wizard of Oz remake is likely a ways off, but Warner Bros. has put their trust in the successful Kenya Barris for the reimagining of the classic story. Expect more details to release as we get closer to the film's production.
