We love the bathroom (honestly, who doesn’t?) but we understand it’s a particularly special place for mums. So we asked Who Gives A Crap’s Senior Copywriter and mother of two, Katie, to share why she and so many others hide in the loo.
Let me start by saying, if motherhood was a job description, no one would apply. There’s no sick days, the hours are garbage and your coworkers openly stare at you while you sit on the toilet.
As a parent of two small children, and a copywriter for a toilet paper company, my life revolves around the loo. When I’m not convincing people to wipe with Who Gives A Crap, I’m convincing my own kids to wipe in general. It’s my everyday headspace, my workspace and, I’m not afraid to admit it, my hiding space.
And according to a recent Who Gives A Crap poll of more than 3,000 participants, I’m not alone. In addition to scrolling social media and the news, people – especially women – revealed that they use the loo to hide from their kids, partner and pets.
Not only am I not surprised, I think mothers should spend more time in the toilet. Here’s why:
Being on call everyday for tiny humans is exhausting. Rewarding, but exhausting. And even people who love their jobs take a lunch break. My restroom rendezvous allow me to love and care for my family without going completely bonkers. They probably think I have IBS, but it’s worth it if I get 10 uninterrupted minutes in the bathroom to play Wordle.
If opportunity comes knocking, responsibility comes banging on the bathroom door asking where their ballet slippers are. I like to think that hiding in the loo teaches my family the importance of healthy boundaries, alone time and independence.
(And the ballet shoes are in the wardrobe, where they always are.)
I dare you to find a more comprehensive space than the loo. It has everything – a toilet, a sink and, most importantly, a door that closes. Plus, there’s the general understanding that whatever you’re doing in there requires a bit of privacy (even if what you’re really doing is scrolling Instagram while you eat a chocolate bar you didn’t want to share).
It comes in many forms, and most of them just so happen to take place in the toilet – like putting on a face mask, soaking in the tub or filling in my eyebrows like Frida Khalo to see if I could pull it off. Like I said, many forms.
All this is to say that while flowers are nice and handmade cards are appreciated, the best gift to give your mum all year around is some uninterrupted time in the toilet.
