New Jersey things to do this weekend: Cinderella comes to Manasquan

Don't forget your glass slippers because it's time to go to the ball.

Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Cinderella" has hit the Algonquin Arts Theatre stage, and will be running through Sunday. 

This musical adaptation of the beloved fairytale features tunes including "In My Own Little Corner," "Impossible/It's Possible" and "Ten Minutes Ago."

Michael Morch plays the Prince and Sophia Lepore, a student at Point Pleasant Borough High School, is Cinderella.

Tickets are $25 to $42, and can be purchased at algonquinarts.org, by calling 732-528-9211 or by visiting the box office from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

The Axelrod Contemporary Ballet Theater (AXCBT) returns to the Axelrod Performing Arts Center Stage this weekend, with songs from "West Side Story," "An American in Paris," "The Sound of Music" and more in a new show called "Something's Coming."

Directed by AXCBT director Gabriel Chajnik, the show includes over a dozen dancers from the company, as well as guest dancers from the Sarasota Ballet, The Metropolitan Opera, The Ailey School and others. Notable songs include "Tonight" and "Somewhere" by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, as well as George and Ira Gershwin's "Our Love is Here to Stay."

Chajnik has invited fellow Juilliard graduate tenor David Smolokoff (who played Tony in the Axelrod’s production of “West Side Story”) and soprano Evy Ortiz (Maria in the national tour of “West Side Story”) to sing some of the songs.

Performances are 8 p.m. Friday, 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday, and 3 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $26 to $54 and can be purchased online or by calling. Group and student discounts are available.

Cosmic Jerry Band, one of the driving acts in the thriving local jam scene, plays the Wonder Bar, Fifth and Ocean Avenues in Asbury Park, at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The band is known for their bold and inventive approach to the Grateful Dead's world of music and beyond. Tickets, $10, are available via wonderbarasburypark.com.

Vegan in NJ, which hosts meetups and markets, and provides resources to the vegan community, will host its first monthly market from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at American Legion Post 346, 21 Gully Road, in Neptune.

The market will feature food, drinks, skincare, art and other products made in New Jersey. This weekend's participants include Salt + Seed, which will offer its pear honey, cheeses and grab-and-go foods; Food Baby, which makes vegan potato doughnuts; Lazy Iris Cookie Co.; Binnie + Clode Co. candles; and Savvy Fit Soaps, among others.

This Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Monmouth County Park System will host its Spring Craft Show at the Fort Monmouth Recreation Center in Tinton Falls.

The show, featuring local artists, is a great place to buy Mother's Day gifts. Some products include baby blankets and accessories, baskets, doll clothes, greeting cards, hair accessories, paintings, jewelry and more.

In a faith-centered response to climate change, the ministries of The Church of Saint Anselm and St. George Greek Orthodox Church will join together for its annual beach sweep, sponsored by the Clean Ocean Act. 

About 40 volunteers from both parishes will pick up litter at Sandy Hook on Saturday morning, and then document it to help identify sources of pollution, as well as potential remedies. 

Working in partnership over the last year, the parishes have hosted lectures and hands-on demonstrations about recycling, composting, green gardening and sustainable food sources. Additionally, they have planted trees; established a butterfly sanctuary; organized community wide plastic collections; and hosted Earth Day and Arbor Day celebrations for Sunday School children.

Rising alt-rock band Slothrust will be coming to Asbury Lanes this Sunday for an 18+ concert, starting at 8 p.m. The headlining Parallel Timeline Tour focusses on the group's September album release, "Parallel Timeline."

It includes singles like "Cranium" and "Once More For The Ocean," which have seen airplay on leading radio stations in Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia and more. The new album has recently been featured on Consequence, Stereogum, Loudwire and more, and can be purchased here.

Rock-band David Wax Museum will be performing this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Concerts in the Studio in Freehold. 

The indie folk group will feature solo material from co-lead singer Suz Slezak, who released her first solo album "Our Wings May Be Featherless" on March 4. The album focuses on difficult moments, like her personal struggle with bipolar disorder, or her friend's suicide.
