Big Sky Country, as Montana is often endearingly referred to, is a truly idyllic place for honeymooners looking to escape the big city or just life's daily grind. The wide open spaces and twinkling stars provide a soothing energy, inviting lovebirds to settle down from the big day and take it all in. Excellent access to the great outdoors, charming tables for two, and splurge-worthy spa services can be found in a select number of romantic hotels in Montana. Bask in the glory of your new union with a Montana honeymoon, and attain the ultimate post-nuptial bliss with a stay at one of the romantic hotels featured in our list.

Why We Chose It: From the owners of The Resort at Paws Up comes this adults-only luxury sanctuary featuring private home accommodations, an exceptional staff, and a nightly tasting menu that will lively become the best meal you've ever had.

Notable Amenities: Fitness center with yoga and barre classes; daily pastry and coffee delivery; private decks

If we had but one word to describe this posh all-inclusive boutique hotel, it would be “unforgettable.” The 21-and-over property is shiny and new, yes, but that’s just the beginning. The Green O is an escape from the city but not at the sacrifice of some of what we appreciate most about bustling metropolises, namely food and drink. Outdoor fireplaces encourage after-hours s’mores-making, and the vast sky above invites simultaneous star-gazing. Just 12 freestanding “hauses” make up the property, and each has jaw-dropping floor-to-ceiling windows that lend an indoor/outdoor feel to the spaces.

As tempting as it might be to stay inside and relish in the luxurious creature comforts of the accommodations, a visit to The Social Haus where theatrical live-fire cooking and craft cocktails await, is a worthy reason for venturing out and meeting the other guests.

Why We Chose It: Located in the heart of Big Sky but positioned just enough afield that forgetting about the rest of the world is an inevitable perk, this ranch offers adventure, relaxation, and reflection.

Notable Amenities: Wood stoves; plush beds

Lone Mountain Ranch has been delivering an authentic Montana experience for over 100 years, and returning guests are testament to the delightful property’s appeal. Composed of 26 cabins which were renovated in 2016, the ranch is also home to one of Big Sky’s best restaurants: Horn & Cantle. Amiable concierge staff is at the ready to help you plan a day exploring nearby Yellowstone National Park or discover the joys of fly-fishing.

If you’re visiting during the winter season, you don’t want to sleep on the Sleigh Ride Dinner. Be taken by horseback to a remote wooden cabin called the Saloon (even more remote than the rest of the property), where you’ll be wined, dined and entertained by song and dance as you get to know your tablemates. Then retreat to the private solitude of your own cabin where the only sounds you’ll hear is gently snow falling and or the summer river running. Book the Ouzel if soaking in a claw-foot tub with your other half sounds like your idea of heaven.

Why We Chose It: Housed in a landmark Art Deco building, this Bozeman hotel is in the heart of the city’s navigable downtown with easy access to more wild explorations.

Notable Amenities: Hosted social hour every evening; Frette linens; multiple on-site restaurants and a cozy bar

The beautiful thing about Montana is that even when you’re in the city centers, you’re still so close to vast swaths of nature. For couples who live to eat while on vacation, a stay in downtown Bozeman isn’t just logical; it’s savvy. While much of Bozeman’s burgeoning food and drink is within walking distance of the hotel, guests can also borrow bikes and set out to discover the city on two wheels. But easy access to Bozeman’s restaurants and bars and cafes wouldn’t amount to much if the Kimpton Armory didn’t consistently provide such an unparalleled experience. Art Deco design features are a highlight of this particular property’s physical attributes, but a warm, welcoming staff, four different social venues, and a rooftop pool make it easy to while away an entire day here.

Being that this is a Kimpton, extras include a daily happy hour, morning coffee and tea service—and pet amenities should you be traveling with your favorite furry friend. Rooms are outfitted with a Bluetooth speaker.

The Resort at Paws Up

Why We Chose It: The original luxury resort and ranch isn’t resting on its laurels in spite of some formidable competition throughout the state of Montana.

Notable Amenities: Complimentary wine on arrival; game room with numerous activities to choose from

Why We Chose It: Distinctive design features and a sophisticated vibe make this inn stand out from other run-of-the-mill lodges; plus, its proximity to Yellowstone National Park can’t be beat.

Notable Amenities: Sauna; complimentary breakfast; robes and slippers for use during stay

If Yellowstone is on the honeymoon agenda and you desire a certain home-grown yet classy aesthetic to your hotels, 1872 Inn is an unregrettable choice. Gilchrist & Soames Guild+Pepper bath amenities, along with towel bar warmers, and the always-appreciated private room for the loo are lovely touches for an inn that prides itself on providing guests with a real, Montana experience.

The rooms themselves, while a touch on the small side, are thoughtfully decorated and in line with what you’d expect from a boutique hotel, not a huge chain brand. Staff are eager to help, and you could do worse things than hang out in the comfortable lobby where coffee and light snacks can be enjoyed.

The Ranch at Rock Creek

Why We Chose It: Luxurious, stylish, and one-of-a-kind, this authentic Western ranch offers no shortage of options to keep guests entertained and blissed out.

Notable Amenities: Horseback riding, fly fishing, and many more activities inclusive with stay; twice daily housekeeping

If you haven’t gone glamping yet, there’s no place like The Ranch at Rock Creek to dive right in and experience the beauty and wonder traditional campers rave about but in a far more attractive manner. This is a dude ranch with all the fixings—the eschewing of a la carte pricing for a bevy of activities which can feel a bit like you’re getting nickel and dimed is a large part of what makes a stay at the ranch stand out. Adrenaline seekers will want to check out the ropes course, though an afternoon on horseback is essential, as is fly fishing, practically mandatory for Montana visitors.

Although you’ll have to pay for spa services outside the use of a sauna and tranquil relaxation area, you’re on your honeymoon, so this is the time to opt for a CBD massage or something even more unique, like the Creekside Conestoga Wagon Massage, which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: a massage in a cozy wagon parked alongside a creek—free nature soundtrack included!

Why We Chose It: With a reputation preceding it, this perfectly-appointed Montage property is a game-changer for the otherwise low-key ski area.

Notable Amenities: Valmont spa; live music on-site; luxurious bedding

One of the most noteworthy things about Montage Big Sky is that it excels in all of the ways you’d expect a from a mega resort, like multiple on-site dining options and an 11,000 square foot spa area with indoor pool; yet its 139 rooms ensure you never feel like you’re just one of hundreds staying on site.

This intimacy is felt most acutely during ski season when dedicated staff are all too happy to help you with all your cumbersome gear, but outside of peak season, life in Big Sky slows down. Though 2022 will mark Montage’s first spring, summer, and fall, we’re confident that all its luxury trappings—from spacious rooms with Champagne-toast worthy views to the spa’s Valmont skincare offerings—will do wonders to delight honeymooners who’ve come to experience Big Sky Country.

Why We Chose It: Combining modern elegance with rustic overtones, this boutique-like property (it’s actually a part of Hilton) has a hip bar and is also within walking distance of downtown Whitefish.

Notable Amenities: Rooftop hot tub; game library on-site; complimentary transportation to and from airport

If you haven’t yet heard, Big Sky is blowing up, and if you and your bestie are keen on marching to the beat of your own drums, the place to take advantage of the Great Outdoors is right here in Whitefish, Montana. Ski bunnies can reach the lifts in 15 minutes, and outside of the winter season, there’s an abundance of options for exploring the natural wonderland that Montana is known for.

The Firebrand is the perfect base for getting to know Glacier National Park and its 600 miles of trails and seemingly infinite wildlife sightings. For couples who really want to do it up, the pleasing hotel can see to it that upon your return to your room, you’re lavished with chocolate covered strawberries, Champagne, and flowers. Borrow a game from the game library and prepare for one of the coziest honeymoon nights of your life.

Many Montana visitors want nothing but the full, authentic ranch experience, and while the sprawling state has dozens of ranch stays to choose from, it’s not the only option depending on what kind of vibe you’re seeking. The Green O's one-with-nature vibes (evident in both the individual homes' thoughtful designs and the nightly nine-course tasting menu) will dazzle the most discerning travelers. If you select The Resort at Paws Up or The Ranch at Rock Creek, there’s no question you’ll have your fill of authentic Montana activities steeped in gorgeous surroundings. For those in search of total privacy, Lone Mountain Ranch, at once unpretentious and inviting (think bartenders that are quick to learn your name) is sweet as can be all tucked away in the woods. But maybe a hip city like Bozeman is more your speed, in which case the Kimpton Armory is ready to welcome you. For a more traditionally refined experience, 1872 Inn’s adults-only policy provides a perfect opportunity for honeymooners.

Although Montana’s growth spurt in recent years means a fantastic array of properties to choose from, it can be time-consuming for would-be honeymooners to parse out the differences, so we’ve done the work for you. We evaluated dozens of hotels, ranches, and resorts throughout Montana, looking at everything from the accommodations to on-site activities and room amenities. We also considered the service, location, and common spaces that might contribute to the overall stay, especially those specifically designed for romance.
